"not a valid libtool object"

	While trying to build gio-fam-backend-2.20.1 (on which many
things depend), I get this:

	This is after upgrading the system to 

FreeBSD 8.0-CURRENT #0: Tue Apr 21 11:03:07 EDT 2009 i386

	Ouch.  I've looked at the (various) mailing list archives and
found nothing useful,  What has broken, and how do I fix it?
