that's with this:
# ls -lh =tar =gtar =bsdtar
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root wheel 47K May 6 2006 /usr/bin/bsdtar
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 19B Nov 12 04:40 /usr/bin/tar ->
/usr/local/bin/gtar
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root wheel 201K Nov 13 20:09 /usr/local/bin/gtar
with bsdtar, it works fine. with gtar, it shits itself.
solution: i had to symlink /usr/bin/bsdtar to /usr/bin/tar to build it. now
that it's done i'm symlinking back to /usr/local/bin/gtar.
