I removed the symlink, deinstalled and ran make install. It fails at the
same place, so the error is repeatable.
/usr/bin/ld: warning: libexpat.so.5, needed by

Now I created a symlink like this:
ln -s /usr/local/lib/libexpat.so.6 /usr/local/lib/libexpat.so.5
Then I run make install again. Here's the end of it.
Making install in test
test -z "/usr/local/libdata/pkgconfig" ||
/usr/ports/graphics/cairo/work/cairo-1.0.2/install-sh -d
"/usr/local/libdata/pkgconfig"
install -o root -g wheel -m 444 'cairo.pc'
'/usr/local/libdata/pkgconfig/cairo.pc'
