Google Earth for Linux works on FreeBSD

Yes. The port is known to not behave well.

No, it's not because of linux-gtk2.

Please install a linux base port which is known to behave well. Either  
the default one, or linux_base-fc4 (you should install the linux-xorg  
port then, but you will not have hardware acceleration then, since the  
linux_dri port is not updated).
