GCC and /usr/bin/ld: unrecognized option '-Wl,-rpath

Now, why can neither Loren nor me reproduce this on 5.4 and 4.10,
respectively, while the ports cluster does?  Any ideas what might
be different?  Non-standard paths, different versions of some tools?
