PHP binding for pdflib

Is anyone using the PHP binding for pdflib (pdflib.com)?  Unless
I'm missing it there's not a port for it and the readme that
comes with the source talks about running the following command:

        pear install pecl/pdflib-2.0.tgz

which sounds like a binary install of the required DSO but that
comes back with the following error.

        Could not open the package file: pecl/pdflib-2.0.tgz

For those that are using it (or were) how does it compare with
print/phppdflib which appears to be similar but written entirely
in PHP.
