I always upgrade from CDs.
I never build worlds, I only build kernels.

I'm not a newbie anymore, but this is the way I do it since I was
one. How many people keep falling in the trap of not upgrading
/etc/rc.conf with sshd_program[sp] when they upgrade security/openssh
and stay vulnerable? How many people keep running old name servers
when they don't mention it in /etc/rc.conf after an reboot?
