I've upgraded from the previous version with portupgrade, then tried
`make deinstall' / `make reinstall', and finally `pkg_delete -f' and
`make clean && make && make install && make clean'. All of these
resulted in the same problem. I would prefer not to have to delete the
whole tree, I've a good number of additional fonts &c. that I'd prefer
not to have to install from scratch.

ditto, with the same results, e.g.:

Running `TeX' on `bca_all_ed' with ``tex  "\nonstopmode\input bca_all_ed.tex"''
This is TeX, Version 3.14159 (Web2C 7.4.5)
tex: fatal: Item 0 (=52495722) of .fmt array at 921e000 >1997.

TeX exited abnormally with code 1 at Sun Jun 27 21:54:03
