What's wrong with it?

Maybe you forgot to add such lines to your xorg.conf:

Section "Extensions"
        Option  "Composite"     "Enable"                                                                                
        Option  "RENDER"        "Enable"                                                                                
EndSection

And yes, it works only with xorg.
