On previous versions (<2.8.4) it broke the build with a message that stated
that the option was unsupported on FreeBSD. I have read that the developers had
changed the JIT code a lot for 3.0.x and it is definitely on my TODO list to
give it another try.

A quick test shows that it's still an issue:

configure: error: JIT is not supported on amd64-portbld-freebsd12.1
