I just upgraded audacity from 2.3.0_5 to 2.3.1 on FreeBSD 12-STABLE and still
can't reproduce. Maybe this is something with 11.2 and gtk strangeness?

Try this, portupgrade -fu gtk2-2.24.32 and see if that works.
