Simple prototype patch to enable MPI parallel support

This patch is most definitely wrong or incomplete.
While it allows building with parallel support, the tests report missing
symbols.
Hopefull somebody with more knowledge (port maintaner, tijl@, etc.) can help
make a proper patch.
