That actually was my plan, alas the update has taken so long that I
forgot my original plan. :(

How about the following?

 PORTNAME=      gcc
-PORTVERSION=   5.4.0
-PORTREVISION=  3
+PORTVERSION=   ${GCC_DEFAULT}
 CATEGORIES=    lang java
