Yeah, it can't work because there are not tagged commits on amsynth's
'develop' branch which is unfortunate.  Since it cannot possibly work
just use

DISTVERSION=    1.8.0.g20171103

if you really need the extra commits over version 1.8.0, or use

DISTVERSIONPREFIX=      release-
DISTVERSION=    1.8.0

if you don't.
