Samba 4.x pulls in quite a few extra deps compared to Samba 3.x, and GnuTLS is
one of them. However, it does not seem necessary in every case. In fact, it
seems that it's only necessary for AD DC functionality. From
https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Build_Samba_from_Source:

Building the AD DC requires
GnuTLS (eg libgnutls-dev, gnutls-devel) for ldaps:// support and for the
BackupKey protocol

I played around with both 4.4.x and an experimental port of 4.5.1, and both
built and ran fine (4.5.1 less fine for unrelated reasons) with both AD DC and
GnuTLS explicitly disabled. Three less ports to install and upgrade, and three
less reasons to shudder in fear of major version changes.
