Fix callers of net_open

Currently, many problem with opening a network connection by apcupsd and some
of the utilities will result in a crash instead of a proper error-report
followed by exit. This is because some callers of the net_open() function
incorrectly check the returned value.

I already reported the problem upstream, but we may wish to add this patch to
the port until a new release is available.
