There was a reason for the bump to 1.8.  I don't recall offhand what it was, I
think it was some runtime issue, but the requirement for 1.8 was challenged and
passed.  Let's assume it's correct.

There's no maintainer for the port.  I'm going to promote the PR to patch-ready
status.
