You misread the message, it is:

"consider trying  INSTALL_TARGET=install-strip or using ${STRIP_CMD}"

INSTALL_TARGET=install-strip is usually for autoconf based ports.

If it doesn't work you can still run ${STRIP_CMD} in post-install.
