 After further investigation it seems that x11-fonts/fontconfig needs to be
 updated first.

 --->  Upgrade of x11-fonts/fontconfig ended at: Tue, 06 Aug 2013 10:55:37
 -0500 (consumed 00:00:41)
 --->  ** Upgrade tasks 1: 1 done, 0 ignored, 0 skipped and 0 failed
 --->  Listing the results (+:done / -:ignored / *:skipped / !:failed)
  	+ x11-fonts/fontconfig (fontconfig-2.9.0,1 ->
 fontconfig-2.10.93,1)
 --->  Packages processed: 1 done, 0 ignored, 0 skipped and 0 failed

 Then x11-toolkits/pango will update successfully.

 --->  Upgrade of x11-toolkits/pango ended at: Tue, 06 Aug 2013 10:56:31
 -0500 (consumed 00:00:37)
 --->  ** Upgrade tasks 1: 1 done, 0 ignored, 0 skipped and 0 failed
 --->  Listing the results (+:done / -:ignored / *:skipped / !:failed)
  	+ x11-toolkits/pango (pango-1.30.1 -> pango-1.34.1)
 --->  Packages processed: 1 done, 0 ignored, 0 skipped and 0 failed

 Sorry for the noise, please close the PR.

 Thank you,

 Andy
