FreeBSD 10-current ports problem(s) - missing .so libs

I've been bitten by the "missing libXXX.so" bug when upgrading ports
under 10-Current.
I am aware of the 20110928 note in /usr/ports/UPDATING, and eventually
managed to figure out what was going on and how to resolve it. But it
would have saved me (and probably others) some time if that note had
described the symptoms and how to resolve them after taking the
workaround steps.
Maybe for example, "in the affected ports, shared libraries will not be
built (or reinstalled after the old version is deleted). to resolve this
you must rebuild libtool after setting the REVISION to 9.9 via one of the
above workarounds."
If there are any other issues caused by the jump to 10-current, it would
be helpful if their symptoms were described as well.
Also, to find UPDATING 20110928, you must actually view/edit the file
/usr/ports/UPDATING. the pkg_updating(1) command fails to note that you are
on 10-current and display that note.
