The problem went away after I've removed jdk15 from my system, installed jdk14
and recompiled Ooo 2 with the following flags:

WITH_KDE=yes        #reason: Using KDE 3.4.3
WITHOUT_MOZILLA=yes #reason: Using firefox
WITH_CUPS=yes       #reason: Need printing support
WITH_TTF_BYTECODE_ENABLED=yes

There is something wrong with WITHOUT_JAVA that breaks native file 'save as'
support. In pre-RC of Ooo 2, that flag used to work.
