Deleting ~/.thunderbird/<profile>/compreg.dat was enough for me.

According to mozilla.org, this is the "Mozilla XPCOM registry. Files 
where Mozilla keeps track of its components."
Probably something goes wrong when this belongs to an older version.
And maybe, this would solve the problems with an upgrade of firefox.
