An update:
If I use 'portupgrade --new --package ddd', the port fails during
the build.
If I then go to the work directory, in my case
/usr/var/tmp/annex/build/ports/devel/ddd/work/ddd-3.3.9/ddd/work
and type 'make clean && make', make does succeed in the build.
If I then re-type 'portupgrade --new --package ddd', the ports
system will use the now-completed build, install it, and sucessfully
make a package.
Seemingly, there is an important difference between my manual make,
and the make environment created by the ports system.
