Ok, that worked (with patch).

When Libreoffice starts, it occupies about 90% of the screen, and there's
garbled output occupying about 10% of the libreoffice window. Re-sizing the
screen normalises the window. Direct conversion to PDF works (using the icon at
the top of the writer window).
