Can't see wood for trees

Hi!

All I need out of my old Duron 900 box is an Apache Server with PHP and
MySQL for testing purposes and a small intranet. In addition to that
I'd also like to get a sendmail, external ftp access for the website
and individual users and SSH as I'll be leaving it in a cupboard
somewhere. I was attracted to FreeBSD for security and the ports
upgrade facility - the thought that I would not have to spend hours
trawling the net for updates and I could just set it to run over night
was a big plus.

But after a successful install (via FTP) of 5.2.1 I'm really starting
to think that I'm out of my depth.

make installworld falls over (I followed the manual)
can't get mysql running at all

Would I be better off using the 4.10 tree? In the end all I want is a
build-it-and-forget box. I can code and script but I haven't got time
to devout more than a couple of hours a month to this box once its
running.
