You appear to have signed up for the digest version of the list.  This means 
that you'll receive one big message daily rather than however many individual 
messages are sent.  The -newbies list tends to be very quiet, so it's not 
surprising that you haven't been getting much else (though I could swear 
people have been talking on this list in the last 2 weeks, but I could be 
wrong).  

Feel free to try to start a conversation.  Most technical questions should be 
taken to the freebsd-questions at freebsd.org list, but if you are looking for 
just helpful hints or advice feel free to ask here.  (Also, while technical 
questions will be redirected to the -questions list, it's not like you'll get 
thrown off the list for asking them.)
