It is actually the opposite -- there is generally one print application, 
that everything uses.  But the Window Manager (WindowMaker, KDE, Gnome 
etc) does not control it.  The print app is a completely seperate program.

Try installing the cups port, and then the xpp port.  This combination 
handles printing beautifully.
