Realtek makes many different ethernet controllers.  The rl(4) driver
supports several of the older chips (10/100M capable) while re(4) supports
most of the newer models (mostly gigabit capable.) These two groups of
controllers are different enough to warrant different drivers.
Of course one could, in theory, unite the rl and re drivers, but they do not
have enough in common for this to be a good idea.
