SIMPLEX network device?

I've noticed in ifconfig report for a gigabit NIC based on Realtek 8169S
chip that it has the SIMPLEX flag set. What does it mean in practice,
considering the media type is (correctly) autonegotiated for 1000baseTX
full-duplex?
