What freebsd distribution and mpd release you are using? Do you have SMP kernel ?
So, uname -a && mpd -v (or mpd4 -v)

I have freebsd 6.1R/amd64 +mpd4 x900 tunnels. Uptime more then 6
month. i.e. no problems.
