That's basicly what my patches do.

Yes it would have, but RE never approved my commit before 5.0 and I
haven't had time since then so it's probably going to be a 6.0 feature.
If the people wanting to add an if_alias member get that approved,
if_xname should go in as well since the ABI will be trashed anyway.
