Try to set

sysctl hw.snd.latency=3

Then to:

4

or

5.

Then restart your application after each try. Does it fix the issue?

There has been a fix to ALSA libraries in FreeBSD and also VLC, to resolve an
issue with audio buffering after a kernel change. Maybe that is what hit you.

Are you using the latest port-version of the audio utilities?

Else I can recommend to use virtual_oss for the audio device instead. It will
hide this issue from ffmpeg.
