Running FreeBSD-12-RELEASE on my X1 carbon 6th gen. I am having the same issue.
Sounds really weird on both speakers and headphones. It is somewhat crackling,
vocals on songs aren't audible at all. Overall, audio is very muffled.
Output for cat /dev/sndstat
> Installed devices:
> pcm0: <Realtek ALC285 (Analog 2.0+HP)> (play) default
> pcm1: <Intel Kabylake (HDMI/DP 8ch)> (play)
> No devices installed from userspace.
