I found your post via a Google search.

 

In your build log you are attempting to read from
http://altosdesign.com/aacgain/alvarez/. That directory no longer exists.
The Unix build system was rewritten in this latest version 1.8. The files
you need are in the CVS tree. You no longer need to unzip a bz2 file.

 

Please see the updated aacgain README and README.linux files for the revised
build instructions.
