Ok, that's not quite true. It does get progressively quieter as the volume is 
adjusted, but the character of the noise changes. There is a fairly quiet 
background hum which I would characterise as "inside of computer" 
interference which is present all the time. Turn the sound up past that 
critical point and another, louder, piece of interference becomes audible 
which is related to the mouse moving and windows being dragged.

I'm dumping this info in the hope that it is useful. If it isn't, please tell 
me and I'll shut up :)
