can I use wireless & wired cards together?

I wrote a quick-n-dirty shell script that looked at the link status of 
my ethernet card - it was connected up, then I used that, and downed the 
wifi card along with deleting all the ip info from it.  If it was 
disconnected, I set up the wifi as usual.
