I'd second the rootbsd recommendation if you are up for running it  
yourself on a VPS. I do webhosting for my clients on my own servers  
and use the rootbsd box as a hot failover. nothing but good things to  
say about them.

but like you said there's thousands of managed web hosting companies  
out there. googling for web hosting reviews might help narrow the  
selection.
