You cannot boot FreeBSD 4.9-RELEASE on an Itanium machine.

You also cannot boot FreeBSD-5.2.1-RELEASE i386 on an Itanium
machine.
Since booting an i386 version of FreeBSD works for you, I suggest
you keep using an i386 version of FreeBSD.
