The method recommended on
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/kernelconfig-building.html
"# make buildkernel KERNCONF=MYKERNEL"
is also a good way to get mismatching kernel and userland. Or any other
way of building just the kernel rather than everything.
