Vim can do gtags, perl, python, ruby... Nvi does not even support dict
completion and syntax highlighting. I don't think nvi is suitable for
daily coding now and the gtags support is not making things better.

I regards nvi as a trustful editor when you login into other ppl's
machines. Because it's almost not configurable, so you can trust it's
behavior. In such case, a "greatest common divisor" feature set is
enough.
