gnome-settings-daemon does not start

I'm trying to run Gnome 2.32.1 built from ports on 9.0-RC2.  There are
no themes and menu icons are missing.  It appears that
gnome-settings-daemon is not running.

If I try running it by hand, it says:

(gnome-settings-daemon:14272): libnotify-WARNING **: you must call
notify_init() before showing
**
libnotify:ERROR:notification.c:568:notify_notification_show: code should
not be reached

Any ideas on how to get it working?
