engimail+thunderbird not working

Under 8-current (amd64), gnome 2.20.1, Enigmail 0.95.5 (20071031) and
thunderbird 2.0.0.6 when ever I attempt to use enigmail it says
"engimail service unavaible" (it even says that when sending
non-signed/encrypted mail)... I don't know enough about the inner
workings of any of these to know where to find any possible logging and
no error messages are given to stdout and/or in dialogs...  how do I
start to debug this?
