Warning, I am a bit dumb on locale stuff. In the WindowsXP with Microsoft
Word can display font correct with all of Bitstream Vera fonts (sans, mono
and serif), so might be bug somewhere in freetype, pango or else. I have
the same result with your screenshots for gtk2/pango.
As for the gvim problem, you have to run it with UTF-8 in LANG set. Like
example, run 'LANG=en_US.UTF-8 gvim", "LANG=uk_UA.UTF-8 gvim" or other
locale will display correct unless you change the font to Bitstream Vera
Serif that will display reversed R a bit strange.
