Unable to remember application bindings after upgrade

The subject line says it all: Every time I try to open a document, I get
the message "Couldn't display...." The menu of possible applications
used to open the document is empty and remains so even after you go
through the procedure of selecting an application. The "Open with" list
in Properties is always empty, even after you add an application to it.
