Thanks much for the hint! The bugzilla entry describes exactly what
I'm experiencing. Furthermore the Bugzilla-date of 2005-07-13 closely
relates the date I've started experiencing this type of behavior.

With the workaround (i.e. entering the complete path to the file)
everything works as expected.
