applications fail to open windows: gdesklets, evolution

Hi again,

as already mentioned in a previous message I am having
problems launching a couple of gnome apps. I have already mentioned my
experiences with evolution:

I just want to add that, following the suggestions I read
somewhere else, I tried to see if I got some debugging
output by setting these variables before running evolution:
CAMEL_DEBUG=all
CAMEL_VERBOSE_DEBUG=1
GROUPWISE_DEBUG=1
DE2K_DEBUG=1 (or 2, 3, 4, 5)

However in all cases, there is no output. As I said before,
evolution runs in the background, no messages appear and no
window ever opens. 

Thus I've set myself to try and somehow get some insight
into what's going on. I then tried truss(1):

truss -o /scratch/fernan/evolution.truss /usr/X11R6/bin/evolution

and watched the output using 'tail -f /scratch/fernan/evolution.truss'

a lot of output is produced rapidly, and then it stops. All
of this output is collected here:

then, after some long minutes, I hit Ctrl-C and finished
collecting a few more lines:

I don't know what this means but it doesn't seem to stop at
the same exact line every time. It is stopping around line
10240 ... but the context lines are not exactly identical.

But, I'm not a programmer, thus this doesn't mean a lot to me. I
collected this info in case it is useful to someone more
knowledgeable than me :)

Do you see anything particularly telling?

Now I've found that gdesklets is showing a similar
behaviour. Namely it does nothing when you click on it's
launcher icon (you see a cursor watch for some time ... then
the cursor arrow again). This time, though, when run in the
command line, some output appears, though I'm not sure if
it's related or not with the problem,

If needed I can also truss gdesklets. I'm running
FreeBSD-4.10-RELEASE-p3. And following is the list of what I
have installed. 

I'll appreciate if you can give me some clue. If you don't
know the solution please guide me as to what you think might
be at fault: evolution, gnome?, my system?
