2.4->2.6 upgrade stuff

There's an AbiWord2/gucharmap chicken-and-egg problem again. I've
committed what I hope is a fix, but it took me nearly a month to fix it
properly the last time. If you have the spare cycles, please test the
upgrade process.

Additionally, FTR, gtk--2 will not build:
