Okay.., check me on this please.., just so I know that I follow: -

Here's how I see your instructions set:

a] Log off Gnome2
b] run top / ps to verify that all Gnome2 apps have exited cleanly (kill off any lingering Gnome2 apps still appearing in top / ps)
c] Run rm -rf for .ICE*, .Trash, .Xauth*, .gconf*, .gnome*, .gtk*, .esd*, .fonts.cache-1, .meta*, .nau*, .recent*, .thumb*, & .xscree*
d] Run rm -rf for any instances for gconfd-stacey, mapping-stacey & orbit-stacey in /var/tmp
e] Run startx

Let me know if I've got that procedure correct, please.
