Hello,
I've just had a strangely familiar problem re-occur with me
tonight.
For some reason, when I try to start gnome2 (with startx) there is a
very long delay before the splash thingy appears - almost 4 minutes. I
mentioned familiar for the simple reason that this exact problem
happened to me a couple of years ago, whilst I was running Gnome-1.2 (I
think).
The short story of the eventual fix for me then was to reinstall Gnome.
I am now wondering if anyone is able to help me with this problem now
appearing now that I'm running Gnome-2.4.2.
I'll include what details I think are relevant here, but if there's any
information I can add, please let me know.
Here's the uname info:

Comment:
The "meta-port" for the GNOME 2 integrated X11 desktop
Description:
GNU Network Object Model Environment
This package does not contain anything by itself -- it is a
"meta-port" that depends on other GNOME packages. Its sole purpose is
to require dependencies so users can install this package only and
have all the GNOME 2 stuff pulled in by the port/package dependency
mechanism.
