gnome2 and checking length of commandline args

Could the check for the length of the commandline arguments be made
any smarter/quicker?  Perhaps using the sysctl kern.argmax?  As of
right now many of the gnome2 ports spend about 1-2 minutes at the

  checking the maximum length of command line arguments... 

in the configure script.
